Their are plenty of rhythm games out there that we've all played. But none really stuck with anyone. Great titles with great tracks! Most (including myself) bought both Guitar Hero AND Rockband but it was the equipment that I think truly killed the rhythm games. The first plastic guitar I got started shorting out in the first few weeks and the drums, well the drums were plagued with issues. From layout, to durability it was crap. Sure, I could go out, drop $800 plus dollars and buy a nice electric kit and use that but really? I'll buy a real kit and take lessons. As a hack bassist myself, with the occasional dabble into guitar, the skill levels were to drastic. And as for the songs that I've actually played live, it just didn't feel right.
This one's different.
It's not often that a game comes along that truly makes me stop and think "Why the hell hasn't someone thought of this earlier?!" Ubisoft's Rocksmith is that game. The key to this game is a cable. a simple 1/4 to USB. The rest is up to you. You WILL learn to play guitar with this, period. But there's a downfall. You need to actually OWN a real guitar. You can buy a new PRS for about $1800 or grab a cheap one for $50 - $100. A friend of the podcast and part time musician, Dino Bravo, picked up a Strat for $150 brand new the looked and played like a $500 guitar. And let's face it, some of the replacement pieces for the rhythm games will start adding up over time.
Let's just imagine that you have a Axe in the attic that you just got tuned up, you picked up the game and now you wonder what you're gonna play. Let's see;
CREAM - Sunshine of you love
BLUR - Song 2
STP - Vasoline
Rolling Stones - Satisfaction
Black Keys - I got Mine
or maybe
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama
So if your serious about learning how to play, not that your gonna join a band right away or anything, but really want to be able to learn a few songs and enjoy playing for real, Rocksmith is the way to go.
