Nintendo Switch Review

I just recently picked up a switch because of the constant harassment of my kids. Without telling my kids I've secretly wanted one for awhile. Nothing to really go over in a unboxing. It's Nintendo and its the same packaging they always use, No Apple awards here. I like the idea of a console of some kind in the living room that we can use as a family and have some fun memorable times. I was especially interested in the  "party" type games that they offered in the commercials. Also It's Nintendo, therefor everything is cute and kid friendly. But for us adults we want that gaming experience that we we also remember as kids.  You get it.

As expected, when you first boot up you get to spend the next several hours going through Nintendo setup process.  Not the most enjoyable on the planet, but still not that hard. Deciding your name, what you want to look like, an online presence  etc. BUT, once that task is completed you can then jump on that nostalgia train.  Kinda.

I know your here for the quick concise BGFG reviews so here's the bottom line for the Nintendo Switch.

Positives -

  • Through the online purchase you can get both the OG Nintendo, and the Super Nintendo games in one type of package which is nice.
  • You have access to many games online but you'll only be able to hold a few, VERY few, in the memory.
  • Form factor is great with the JoyCons easily removable for multiplayer.
  • Mario Party games (basically anything Nintendo makes in-house) are great family fun
  • The Dock is a great feature that has been long overdo and seamlessly allows you to play right on your TV
  • Accessories, accessories, accessories they are everywhere and many of them are very cool

Negatives

  • Your buying some extra shit here
  • Not comfortable to hold if you have big hands....or hands bigger than a 10 year old. So get some sort of grip
  • For us GenXers your going to need an extra set of Joy-Cons to actually ENJOY multi player games (which is most likely the reason you bought it anyway)
  • Games start at $60 expect to spend a couple of hundred on games alone just to get started. (Mario Kart, Mario Party, etc)
  • Yes, NES Classics and Super Nintendo Classics will cost you some money as well
  • If you're buying this just for you get yourself at least one Pro controller.  For yourself.
  • The game cards are TINY. Expect to lose them
  • There is no storage to really speak of, you're gonna need to get yourself some memory cards to at least store some shit on

Bottom Line

Yes, it's Nintendo, yes, you will have a good time with family and friends playing this shit but it's going to cost you in time, money, and aggravation every time you sit down to play and realize that you need something ELSE to have some enjoyment.
If you have kids under 14 or grand kids this is indeed a good purchase.
If you're doing this just for a nostalgia ride, then get one of the "mini" units.  You'll have just as much fun for much less of a cost.
